In healthcare, protecting personal data is a given. But equally important is being able to demonstrate who has had access to this data. Healthcare organizations must not only secure personal data but also be able to account for which employees have viewed which information.
The Audit Log module makes this transparency simple and clear.
Why audit logging is important
Personal health information is among the most confidential data that an organization processes. Patients must be able to trust that their data is only accessed by authorized individuals and for legitimate purposes.
The standard NEN 7513:2024 therefore sets requirements for recording events related to:
access to personal health information;
search actions within personal health information;
exchange of personal health information with third parties.
By recording these events, a verifiable trail is created that allows organizations to demonstrate that patient data is handled carefully.
When a user views a selected field, a log entry is automatically created.
An example:
Jan de Vries heeft op 10 juni 2026 om 10:43 uur de geboortedatum van patiënt X ingezien.
For each registration, it is recorded:
who has viewed the information;
which information has been consulted;
at what moment this took place;
within which file the access took place.
This creates a complete and reliable overview of all relevant access moments.
Support of NEN 7513
NEN 7513:2024 describes that the entire lifecycle of personal health information must be verifiable. Logging plays an essential role in this. The standard emphasizes that healthcare organizations must be able to reconstruct which events have occurred regarding access to health information.
The Audit Log module supports organizations in fulfilling this obligation by:
recording access to selected personal data;
making a verifiable audit trail available;
supporting accountability towards patients, auditors, and regulators;
enabling investigation into unauthorized access.
More control over privacy and compliance
Audit logging is more than a technical function. It is an important part of information security, privacy protection, and compliance.
By making clear who has consulted which data, organizations can:
comply with laws and regulations;
perform internal controls;
detect potential abuse situations more quickly;
provide transparency towards patients and clients.
From insight to control
With the Audit Log module, your organization has a powerful tool to record and monitor access to personal data. By registering who has accessed sensitive information for each data field, a reliable audit trail is created that meets the requirements of NEN 7513:2024 and contributes to a safe and transparent handling of patient data.
