What is a PoC
What is a Proof of Concept (PoC)? Actually, how can this help in deciding whether to implement Odoo or Care Software?
A proof of concept (PoC) is a method or research that tests the feasibility of an idea, concept, or technology before you invest further in its development. The primary goal of a PoC is to demonstrate that an idea is technically or practically feasible in the real world, without having to build the full product yet.
Since an implementation of Odoo and/or Care Software can be intensive and quite significant, we refer to it as a Proof Of Concept. Although the definition of a PoC refers to a design and not a functional prototype, we always call it that. We do this mainly because the word "Proof" is enclosed in the name. Essentially, we are trying to prove with such a project that the solution would also be suitable for the client. So, purely from a technical perspective, it would be more of a prototype. Care Software and Odoo are both complete and fully functioning solutions when combined, but without implementation, such a solution is often unusable for a client.
That is why we call it a Proof of Concept in our case.
Important features of a proof of concept:
- Test the feasibility: You investigate whether the idea is technically possible, often with a limited, small-scale setup.
- Risk reduction: By testing in advance, you prevent spending a lot of time and money on an idea that ultimately does not work.
- Justification for stakeholders: A PoC helps to convince investors, management, or other stakeholders of the potential of the idea.
- Not a complete product: A PoC is (in our case) a prototype. It is usually a theoretical or technical proof, not a fully developed product with all features and desired options for the client.
- Limited functions: During the PoC, some processes are tested, and there is no fully implemented solution. Additionally, only predetermined test data is used, and actual client data is not utilized.
The main benefits of a PoC
Less risk
By testing a number of crucial processes in advance, the client experiences the power of the solution, without being bound to a long-term investment beforehand.
Testing
During the PoC, an initial test is already conducted; this familiarizes users with the solution and the power of the solution. This benefits acceptance when the actual implementation begins.
GAP Analysis
During the PoC, there are usually questions/requests about the desired features. This helps to conduct a so-called GAP analysis. A GAP analysis maps out which desired features exist and which are built into the software as standard or not. Normally, an implementation always starts with a GAP analysis. So if you have done a PoC earlier, that GAP analysis can be done faster and thus costs less time and money. (In some cases, a GAP analysis may no longer need to be done.)
Sharing knowledge
The time and investment in a PoC is largely recouped in a follow-up. If the client chooses to start the implementation, all investments in the PoC are valuable. As a partner, we are already familiar with the process and (part of) the stakeholders; we have also discussed where attention is needed for any adjustments. Therefore, it is much easier for us to provide a budget and thus a quote. The chance of budget overruns is much lower than without a PoC phase.
